How to dry your car without streaks: the complete guide
Streaks and water spots almost always appear during drying. Here is the right method, step by step, for a glossy car with no marks.
You washed your car carefully, but as soon as it dries you see streaks, dried droplets and white spots. It happens to almost everyone, and the problem is rarely the wash: it is the drying. Tap water contains limescale and minerals; if it evaporates on the paint by itself, the minerals stay behind. Here is how to avoid it.
1. Work in the shade on cool paint
Sun and hot panels make water evaporate in seconds, before you can remove it. Wash and dry in the shade, early in the morning or in the evening. When it is hot, dry each panel right after rinsing it.
2. Use the right towel (not a chamois)
The towel makes the difference. A good microfiber drying towel is:
- High-GSM: more fibres means more water absorbed per pass.
- Large: an XL size covers bonnet and roof in a few passes, reducing friction.
- Soft with no hard edges, so it will not mark the paint.
Chamois leather, cotton towels and paper towels hold little water, saturate quickly and can leave lint or micro-scratches.
3. Technique: lay and drag, don’t rub
- Start at the roof and work down: glass, bonnet, boot, sides, then the lower panels.
- Lay the towel flat on the wet surface.
- Pull it slowly towards you without pressing. Let the microfiber do the work.
- When the towel is saturated, wring it out and carry on.
- On small areas (mirrors, handles) fold the towel and pat dry.
4. Don’t forget the spots that drip
Mirrors, handles, lights, badges and door shuts hold water that runs out a few minutes later and leaves streaks. Open the doors, bonnet and boot and dry the shuts. A leaf blower or compressed air pushes water out of gaps; then go over with the towel once more.
5. The most common mistakes
- Letting the car air-dry or drying it by driving: the number-one cause of water spots.
- Using the same towel on wheels and paint: brake dust scratches.
- Rubbing hard in circles: it creates swirl marks you see in the sun.
- Using a towel washed with fabric softener: it no longer absorbs (see our microfiber care guide).
In short: shade, a large high-GSM microfiber towel, drag without pressure and dry the dripping spots straight away. No more streaks.
That is why we made MIRASIC DRYMAX 1000: 1000 GSM microfiber in a 90×70 cm format, designed only for drying. One towel, one whole car.
