How to hand wash your car without scratches: the 6-step method
Most micro-scratches in paint are created while washing. With the two-bucket method and the right order you can avoid almost all of them.
The fine circles you see in the paint when the sun hits it are called swirls, and most of the time the car wash is not to blame: they come from a hand wash done in the wrong order or with the wrong tools. The principle is simple: the less dirt you rub over the paint, the fewer scratches you make.
What you need
- Two buckets (ideally with a grit guard)
- A gentle, pH-neutral car shampoo
- A microfiber wash mitt for the paint
- A wheel cleaner and a dedicated wheel brush
- A large microfiber drying towel
1. Start with the wheels
Wheels are the dirtiest part: brake dust and road grime. Wash them first, with tools that never touch the paint, so splashes don’t land on clean panels.
2. Pre-wash: remove dirt without touching
Rinse the whole car thoroughly from top to bottom. If you use a snow foam pre-wash, let it dwell for a few minutes (don’t let it dry) and rinse: it softens the dirt and carries some away before the mitt touches the paint.
3. The two-bucket method
One bucket with water and shampoo, the other with clean water only. After each panel rinse the mitt in the clean-water bucket, wring it out, and only then dip it back in the shampoo. The dirt stays in the rinse bucket instead of going back onto the paint.
4. Top to bottom, in straight lines
Roof, glass, bonnet and boot, upper sides, then the lower panels and bumpers, which are the dirtiest. Move the mitt in straight passes without pressure: straight-line marks are far less visible than circular ones.
5. Final rinse
Rinse with plenty of water, always from the top. A trick: on the last pass remove the nozzle and let the water flow gently over the panels, so most of it sheets off by itself.
6. Dry straight away
Never let the car air-dry: that is how water spots form. Use a large, high-GSM microfiber towel and follow our guide to drying without streaks.
The golden rule: if the mitt falls on the ground, don’t use it again until it has been washed. A single grain of sand is enough to scratch a whole panel.
We are preparing our exterior range: FOAM, WASH, WHEEL and TIRE, together in the MIRASIC EXTERIOR KIT. For the final step, DRYMAX 1000 is already available.
